We are excited to have you join a Spalding Education Course.
Below, you will find our course policies and requirements.

Reading Foundations (Onsite)

I. Course Requirements

  1. Instruction and Practice: Enjoy learning from both the student and teacher perspectives.
  2. Daily Class Assignments: Stay engaged with daily assignments that reinforce learning.
  3. Quizzes: Test knowledge of rules, markings, and phonograms.
  4. Handwriting Instruction and Assessments: Sharpen handwriting instruction and skills.
  5. Daily Homework: Expect homework to reinforce classroom learning.
  6. Demonstration: Show new skillsets and knowledge through a Spalding Spelling Lesson demonstration.
  7. Technology: Need a basic working knowledge of computers, internet use, and word processing. Be self-directed in learning modern technology skills (e.g., following a handout, a step-by-step tutorial, or online video help.)

II. Course Policies

A. Protecting Your Privacy

  1. Protecting your privacy and the confidentiality of your personal information is important to us.
  2. Records are maintained for data from application and registration documents. The records are in a filing facility and/or on a secure server at the Spalding Education International (SEI) offices.
  3. Only official and qualified administrators of SEI have access to all records.
  4. SEI will not submit, release, or provide participant records and information to any outside agency or party.
  5. We will, with your help, keep your information accurate, complete, and up to date. If you wish to amend any details we hold on file, please contact the SEI office in writing.

B. Attendance, Assignments, Special Needs, and Refund Policies

  1. Punctuality and attendance for the duration of each session is required.
    1. An excused absence will be granted in the case of an emergency or unavoidable event. Notify the instructor immediately. An excused absence will be granted if the participant received prior instructor approval. The participant will be required to complete all assignments listed on the LMS for the missed session. Two excused absences for any reason will result in an automatic loss of 50 points.
    2. Missing more than 30 minutes of a session is considered an excused absence.
    3. An unexcused absence will be granted if the participant did not receive prior instructor approval. The participant will be required to complete all assignments listed on the LMS for the missed session. One unexcused absence will result in an automatic loss of 50 points. A second unexcused absence will result in another automatic loss of 50 points.
    4. Missing more than 60 minutes of a session is considered an unexcused absence.
    5. In the case of a religious holiday, notify the instructor in advance and arrange to complete session assignments.
    6. A withdrawal is required in the case of more than two unexcused absences for any reason.
    7. Audits (attendance without completing all requirements) are not allowed.
  2. All homework assignments are due by the next session. If an assignment is late, the participant will receive a 25% grade reduction for each session the assignment is not turned in to the instructor. The instructor may ask a participant to redo an assignment one time for an improved grade. If an assignment is redone, it is due by the next session, or the original grade will be recorded. If there are missing assignments or quizzes, the participant may receive an incomplete.
  3. If you have special needs, notify the instructor in advance to make appropriate arrangements.
  4. A refund equal to the course fee will be issued upon written request to Spalding Education International (SEI) for course withdrawal up to, but not later than, the start of the second session of any Spalding course. The cost of course materials (less 10% restocking fee) may be refunded if the materials are returned to SEI in like-new condition within 30 days.

C. Copyright Acknowledgement

  1. The Writing Road to Reading, Spalding Teacher’s Guides, test preparation materials, and all other written, audio, and audio visual materials available from SEI are protected by U.S. and Foreign Copyright Laws. The transmission, reproduction, modification, or reuse of protected material, beyond the allowed by the fair use principles of the copyright law, is strictly prohibited. Customized supplemental materials are considered copyright derivative works, and, therefore, infringe the copyrights of SEI unless approved in writing. The undersigned agrees that s/he will not transmit, modify, or reproduce Spalding copyrighted materials without express written authorization of SEI.

Reading Foundations (Hybrid)

I. Course Requirements Part 1

A. Online Portion (4 Units)

  1. Personal Learning: Dedicate 5-7 hours a week to complete each unit.
  2. Weekly Deadlines: Stay on top of the weekly deadlines set for each of the 4 units. All assignments must be completed to attend the onsite sessions.
  3. Unit Assignments: Dive into engaging assignments that include watching videos, discussion posts, and understanding the Spalding Spelling Lesson procedures.
  4. Quizzes: Test knowledge of rules, markings, and phonograms.
  5. Handwriting Instruction and Assessments: Sharpen handwriting instruction and skills.
  6. Technology: Need a basic working knowledge of computers, internet use, and word processing. Be familiar with using document scanners or document scanning apps to convert handwritten work to a PDF file. Be self-directed in learning new technology skills (e.g., following a handout, a step-by-step tutorial, or online video help.)
    1. Hardware
      1. PC or Mac with reliable, high-speed internet connection
      2. Speakers, microphone, and webcam

II. Course Policies Part 1

A. Assignments, Special Needs, and Refund Policies

  1. Complete all assignments in each unit.
    1. Each unit is divided into 2 parts.
    2. Complete Part 1 before moving on to Part 2.
    3. Complete the assignments in order.
  2. All unit assignments must be completed by Thursday at 11:59 PM.
    1. No extensions will be granted.
    2. Any assignments not submitted by the deadline will receive a zero.
    3. All assignments must still be completed to attend Part 2 (in-person).
  3. Units are designed to be completed one week at a time.
    1. Do not go ahead.
    2. Do not start working on the next unit assignments.
    3. Instructor feedback from previous unit assignments must be incorporated in the next unit’s assignments.
  4. If you have special needs, notify the instructor in advance to make appropriate arrangements.
  5. A refund equal to the course fee will be issued upon written request to Spalding Education International (SEI) for course withdrawal up to, but not later than, the start of the second unit of this Spalding course. The cost of course materials (less 10% restocking fee) may be refunded if the materials are returned to SEI in like-new condition within 30 days.

III. Course Requirements Part 2

A. Onsite Portion (5 Sessions)

  1. Instruction and Practice: Enjoy practicing the Spalding Spelling Lesson procedures from the teacher perspective for sessions 1-4.
  2. Daily Class Assignments: Stay engaged with daily assignments that reinforce learning.
  3. Daily Homework: Expect homework to reinforce learning.
  4. Demonstration: Show new skillsets and knowledge through a Spalding Spelling Lesson demonstration in session 5.

IV. Course Policies Part 2

A. Protecting Your Privacy

    2. Missing more than 30 minutes of a session is considered an excused absence.
    3. An unexcused absence will be granted if the participant did not receive prior instructor approval. The participant will be required to complete all assignments listed on the LMS for the missed session. One unexcused absence will result in an automatic 10% total grade reduction.
    4. Missing more than 60 minutes of a session is considered an unexcused absence.
    5. In the case of a religious holiday, notify the instructor in advance and arrange to complete session assignments.

    7. Audits (attendance without completing all requirements) are not allowed.

Effective Strategies in Writing and Reading (Onsite and Zoom)

I. Course Requirements

  2. Daily Class Assignments: Stay engaged with daily assignments that reinforce learning.
  3. Quizzes and Assessments: Test knowledge of rules, markings, and syllable division patterns.
  4. Daily Homework: Expect homework to reinforce classroom learning.
  5. Demonstration: Show new skillsets and knowledge through a 3 Mental Actions demonstration.
  6. Technology: Need a basic working knowledge of computers, internet use, and word processing. Be familiar with using document scanners or document scanning apps to convert handwritten work to a PDF file. Be self-directed in learning modern technology skills (e.g., following a handout, a step-by-step tutorial, or online video help.)
    1. Hardware.
      1. PC or Mac with reliable, high-speed internet connection.
      2. Printer.
      3. Word processing software; preferably Microsoft Word.
  7. Required Materials:
    1. The Writing Road to Reading textbook.
  8. Additional Requirements for Zoom Course:
    1. Speakers, microphone, and webcam.
    2. Camera ON at all times for active participation and course credit.
    3. Please Note: Sessions are not recorded; being present and focused during designated times are essential.

II. Zoom Protocols

I understand and agree to comply with the following Spalding Zoom course protocols:

  1. Workspace must be set up in a quiet, stationary area without distractions. Examples:
    1. Avoid having other people in the room.
    2. Do not use your phone to Zoom and multitask e.g., attend appointments, drive, make food, etc.
  2. Camera must remain on throughout the entire time of each session.
    1. The instructor needs to see your face in the camera view at all times.
    2. Instructor will note absence if the camera is off.
      1. Missing more than 30 minutes of a session is considered an excused absence.
      2. Missing more than 60 minutes of a session is considered an unexcused absence.
  3. Course sessions are not recorded.
    1. Participants must be available and focused on the course session during the designated times and days.
