Welcome to the Reading Foundations Ad Hoc Course. This Reading Foundations course was designed to meet the needs of individuals unable to attend an in-person course. It is important for the participant to understand that this course does not take the place of the original Reading Foundations course; it is yet a mere substitution for the unique circumstance. The Spalding procedures are usually taught and practiced in person with a Spalding instructor so consistent feedback and refinements improve implementation and fidelity of Spalding procedures over the span of one or two weeks. The participant will be required to complete all work within the deadline requirements and meet with a Spalding instructor via Zoom so observations of each procedure can be observed and feedback can be provided.
This course prepares participants to successfully implement The Writing Road to Reading program. This scientifically based language arts program is a multisensory method that teaches the foundational skills of reading and writing.
This course was created by combining existing videos. Please note some videos mention and show “child” and “parent” instead of “student” and “teacher”. Please ignore these differences.
Course Learning Management System (LMS)
The purpose of the Learning Management System, LMS, is simply to facilitate coursework during the course. Once a participant receives a final grade and certificate from the course, the course may be removed. We do not expect a participant to access his/her course after the course is completed.
It is best practice to save all assignments uploaded into the LMS to a personal computer in case resubmission is necessary.
Participant Workbook
Please review the General Information section of the Reading Foundations Participant Workbook. This section provides information regarding course objectives, attendance, and other important details to achieve success in the course.
Spalding Procedure Observations
An essential part of this course is to practice implementing Spalding’s Spelling Lesson (SSL) procedures with fidelity. To support you in this process, a Spalding instructor will meet with you via Zoom and watch as you implement SSL procedures. The Spalding instructor will also participate in these lessons as the student.
After the observation, the instructor will provide specific feedback. Implement this feedback in each subsequent lesson to improve your Spalding instruction. The majority of your grade will be earned during these SSL observations.
Your instructor will contact you to set up a schedule for your Zoom observations.
