Welcome to the Reading Foundations Ad Hoc Course. This course was designed to meet the needs of individuals who are unable to attend the original in-person Reading Foundations course. It is important to understand that this course does not replace the original Reading Foundations course; rather, it serves as a temporary alternative for unique circumstances when in-person attendance is not possible.
Spalding procedures are typically taught and practiced in person with a Spalding instructor over a two-week period. This allows participants to receive consistent feedback, make refinements, and strengthen their implementation and fidelity of the Spalding procedures throughout the course. Participants in this Ad Hoc Course will be required to complete all coursework within the established deadlines and meet with a Spalding instructor via Zoom. These Zoom sessions will allow the instructor to observe participants demonstrating each procedure and provide individualized feedback.
This course prepares participants to successfully implement The Writing Road to Reading. This scientifically based language arts program uses a multisensory approach to teach the foundational skills of reading and writing.
Important Note About Existing Videos: This course was created by combining existing instructional videos. As a result, some videos may refer to or show a “child” and “parent” rather than a “student” and “teacher.” Please disregard these differences in terminology and apply the instruction to your current teaching context.
Learning Management System (LMS)
The purpose of the Learning Management System, LMS, is simply to facilitate coursework during the course. Once a participant receives a final grade and certificate from the course, the course may be removed. We do not expect a participant to access his/her course after the course is completed.
It is best practice to save all assignments uploaded into the LMS to a personal computer in case resubmission is necessary.
Participant Workbook
Please review the General Information section of the Reading Foundations Participant Workbook. This section provides information regarding course objectives, attendance, and other important details to achieve success in the course.
Spalding Procedure Observations
An essential part of this course is to practice implementing Spalding’s Spelling Lesson (SSL) procedures with fidelity. To support you in this process, a Spalding instructor will meet with you via Zoom and watch as you implement SSL procedures. The Spalding instructor will also participate in these lessons as the student.
After the observation, the instructor will provide specific feedback. Implement this feedback in each subsequent lesson to improve your Spalding instruction. The majority of your grade will be earned during these SSL observations.
Your instructor will contact you to set up a schedule for your Zoom observations.
