Homework

Postby mypugcantread » Wed Aug 26, 2009 11:00 am

Hi,

After spelling begins, what does a typical night of homework look like for a Grade 1 class?

Also, how much time are students expected to do for homework each evening. As I come from a community where most will not do the homework, how have others tackled this hurdle?

Thanks

You have a very valid question. Your child could review the spelling words for that day or week by reading them for spelling (by sounds if one syllable or by syllable if words have more than one syllable) and for reading (in normal speech without stopping to segment each). Your child could also give oral or written sentences with 1 or 2 spelling words to demonstrate meaning and usage of unfamiliar spelling words using any of the four types of simple sentences or compound or complex sentences (depending on the types that have already been taught to your child).

Many Spalding Accredited schools require only 15 but not more than 30 minutes of homework several nights a week. If you are a teacher, try incentives to get children to complete homework (stickers, chart on wall, etc.) and encourage parents to see the value of homework. These suggestions can be used with home schooled children also. Remember that homework should be a review to reinforce skills/objectives that have already been taught. It should have meaning to the student, not busy work such as writing words many times.
